Adult ADHD Treatment in Cedar Park and greater Austin
Comprehensive evaluation and evidence-based treatment for adults struggling with focus, organization, and follow-through.
What does ADHD look like?
ADHD in adults often looks different than people expect. Many high-functioning professionals struggle quietly for years before seeking help
You may notice:
• Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks, conversations, or reading
• Frequently starting tasks but failing to follow through to completion
• Avoiding or delaying tasks that require sustained mental effort
• Trouble organizing tasks, priorities, or materials
• Frequently losing items necessary for daily functioning
• Being easily distracted by external stimuli or unrelated thoughts
• Forgetfulness in routine responsibilities
If this sounds familiar, a structured evaluation can clarify what’s going on.

How is ADHD Evaluated?
A thorough assessment typically includes:
• Detailed clinical interview
• Developmental and academic history
• Review of current symptoms and impairment
• Screening for related conditions like anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and other conditions
• Use of standardized rating scales or formal neuropsychological testing when appropriate
The goal should be diagnostic clarity — not a rushed prescription.
Treatment Options
Treatment should be individualized and may include:
Medication Management
Careful selection and titration of stimulant or non-stimulant medications when appropriate.
Skills-Based Therapy
Executive function strategies, cognitive-behavioral approaches, and reviewing systems to improve organization and follow-through.
Lifestyle Optimization
Sleep, exercise, and environmental adjustments that meaningfully impact attention and energy.
TMS Therapy
For some patients, symptoms of depression or anxiety occur alongside ADHD — and addressing those conditions can meaningfully improve focus, motivation, and daily functioning. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-medication treatment option that targets the brain circuits involved in mood regulation. When clinically appropriate, TMS may be considered as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
My Approach
In recent years, more adults have wondered whether they may have ADHD. While awareness has increased, not every difficulty with focus or productivity is ADHD.
Accurate diagnosis requires more than a brief checklist. A detailed clinical history — including developmental background, current functioning, and careful assessment of overlapping conditions such as anxiety, mood disorders, sleep disruption, or stress — is essential.
I take time to evaluate the full picture. Quick prescription models may offer short-term relief, but without diagnostic clarity, long-term outcomes are often limited.
Treatment decisions are made thoughtfully and collaboratively. When appropriate, I also help patients develop practical systems for organization, follow-through, and improved executive functioning.
Details matter. A careful evaluation lays the foundation for effective treatment.
ADHD Treatment Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do you prescribe stimulant medications?
Stimulant medications are prescribed when clinically indicated and when the potential benefits clearly outweigh the risks. A careful evaluation is conducted prior to initiation, including assessment for current or past substance misuse, alcohol overuse, and relevant medical conditions.
Certain medical issues — such as uncontrolled hypertension or underlying cardiovascular disease — may limit or preclude the use of stimulant medications. In these cases, alternative treatment strategies are considered.
It is also important to note that stimulant therapy is not the only effective option for ADHD. Many patients achieve meaningful symptom improvement through non-stimulant medications, structured behavioral interventions, and targeted executive function strategies.
Treatment decisions are individualized and made with careful attention to safety, diagnostic clarity, and long-term outcomes.
2) Do you treat children or only adults?
Currently, Dr. Mathews only works with adults 22yo and older. We do not treat children or adolescents.
3) Do you accept insurance?
Austin Mind & Wellness is network with BCBS PPO plans and most Aetna plans. We do NOT take other commercial plans like Cigna, United, Oscar Health, Ambetter or Sendero.
4) How long is the initial evaluation?
Every initial evaluation is scheduled for 90 minutes. Average evaluations in other clinics may be shorter (e.g. 30min - 1hr), but quick visits can often miss other key aspects of treating someone’s overall mental health.
