ADHD Treatment in Cedar Park, TX

Care from a board-certified psychiatrist for adults whose attention, organization, or follow-through keeps costing them more than it should.

Many adults with ADHD have spent years compensating. The intelligence and effort are there, but ordinary tasks take disproportionate energy, and the gap between capability and output keeps widening. Care here starts with understanding what is driving that, before settling on a diagnosis or a treatment.

Symptoms

What ADHD can look like

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition. It involves a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity, or both that interferes with daily functioning. Several symptoms must have been present before age 12, although ADHD may not be recognized until adulthood. Symptoms can change with age and may persist into adult life. In adults it more often looks like disorganization, restlessness, and unfinished projects than the classroom picture people expect. In busy professionals, years of structure and raw effort can mask it, so it can go unrecognized for a long time.

Common experiences include:

  • Starting strong on projects, then stalling before the finish
  • Losing track of time, deadlines, or belongings
  • Difficulty prioritizing when everything feels urgent
  • Zoning out in meetings or conversations
  • Restlessness, or needing to stay in motion to think
  • Acting or speaking before thinking it through
  • Procrastinating on routine tasks until they become crises
  • A long history of working twice as hard for the same result
Diagnosis

What else it could be

Difficulty concentrating, restlessness, and trouble finishing tasks do not always mean ADHD. Anxiety, depression, sleep problems, medical conditions, and substance use can cause similar symptoms, and more than one condition can be present. In my recent clinical experience, more than half of new consultations for possible ADHD have led us to uncover a different explanation for the symptoms. My work is to look beyond the surface and understand what is driving the difficulties. Whether that is ADHD, something else, or a combination, the goal is a clear understanding and a plan that helps you move toward what matters to you.

Care here

How care works here

01

A full evaluation first

New patients start with a short phone screen, then a psychiatric evaluation of up to 90 minutes covering your history, temperament, medical issues, sleep, thinking patterns and beliefs, and life story.

02

Treatment matched to you

Options include therapy built into your visits, medication when it helps, and treatment that goes beyond a stimulant alone. When stimulants are part of care, prescribing is careful and conservative, consistent with this practice’s controlled-substances policy. The right mix depends on your symptoms, your history, and your preferences.

03

One physician over time

The psychiatrist who evaluates you manages your care, with follow-up visits of 30 or 45 minutes. Telehealth and in-person visits are available for adults located in Texas.

Fit

Who this care is built for

This practice is built for busy professionals, entrepreneurs, and small business owners. Dr. Mathews is board-certified in psychiatry (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology), completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and completed a clinical research fellowship at the NIH. If another setting would serve you better, you will hear that early.
Common questions

Common questions

Can ADHD show up for the first time in adulthood?

The diagnosis requires symptoms that began in childhood, but many adults were never evaluated. Bright, hardworking people often compensate for years, and the pattern only becomes obvious when responsibilities outgrow the coping strategies.

Will I be prescribed a stimulant?

Not automatically. Stimulants help many adults with ADHD, but they are one option, not the starting assumption. Treatment here goes beyond a stimulant alone, and any controlled-substance prescription follows a careful, conservative approach.

What does treatment look like beyond medication?

Visits build therapy into the appointment itself: understanding your patterns, structuring work around how your attention actually behaves, and addressing the anxiety or low mood that often travels with ADHD.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911. The office does not provide crisis or emergency services.
